Patterns of Weight Loss/Regain After Web Program

People who took part in a web-based weight loss program transitioned immediately from weight loss to regain without a maintenance period, in a study involving 75 individuals. The regain, however, slowed over time. Participants took part in a 12-week, web-based weight loss program. They weighed themselves using “smart” scales during the program and for an additional 9 months post-intervention. Investigators looked at weight change moves from weight loss to maintenance/regain. They observed 3 phases:

  • In the first phase, participants lost an average of 0.46 kg/wk.
  • In the second phase after ~80 days, they regained an average of 0.07 kg/wk.
  • In the third phase, at ~7 months, they regained an average of 0.06 kg/wk.

The authors said they were able to identify baseline/demographic factors that predicted the timing of transition points and slope of weight change within phases.
