CPAP Use Associated with Greater Weight Loss in Obese Patients

Key clinical point: In obese patients with sleep apnea, use of CPAP devices was associated with increased weight loss.

Major finding: After 16 weeks in a weight-loss program, CPAP users lost 26.7 lb (12.1 kg) on average, and those not using CPAP lost 19.2 lb (8.7 kg; P less than .01).

Data source: Retrospective study of 300 patients with obstructive sleep apnea who had participated in an intensive weight loss program.
