After gestational diabetes, longer lactation tied to lower risk for type 2

Key clinical point: Prolonged breastfeeding should be encouraged in women diagnosed with gestational diabetes to mitigate increased risk for later development of type 2 diabetes.

Major finding: More than 2 years of breastfeeding was associated with a 27% reduction in risk for type 2 diabetes, compared with no breastfeeding.

Study details: Retrospective analysis of 4,372 women with a history of gestational diabetes in the Nurses’ Health Study II, followed for 25 years for incident type 2 diabetes.

Disclosures: The National Institutes of Health supported the study. Dr. Ley was supported by a National Institute of General Medical Sciences grant from the NIH. None of the study authors reported any conflicts of interest, and neither did Dr. Gunderson.
