Penicillin-Susceptible Streptococcus Pneumoniae Common Cause of Bacteremic CAP

Key clinical point: Children admitted with community-acquired pneumonia who have pleural effusion or require ICU admission are most likely to have bacteremia.

Major finding: Children with CAP rarely had positive blood culture results, only 2% in this study of over 2,000 children.

Study details: Large, multicenter cohort study with 2,358 participants.

Disclosures: Dr. Fritz had no conflicts of interest to report. Some coauthors cited multiple sources of potential conflicts of interest related to consulting fees, grant support, and research support from various pharmaceutical companies and agencies. The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health and in part by a grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
