Dementia Progression in Men and Women with AF

Am J Cardiol; ePub 2018 Aug 3; Golive, et al

In both men and women who develop atrial fibrillation, dementia rates are increased and do not show sex-based differences in risk, a recent study found. Researchers examined patients who underwent coronary angiography and enrolled in a prospective cardiovascular database. Patients could not have a prior diagnosis of AF or dementia and had to have 5 years of follow-up for inclusion. Endpoints included incident AF and dementia. Among the details:

  • 35,608 patients were included in the study (40.4% female).
  • Women had lower rates of hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease (CAD), prior myocardial infarction (MI), but higher rates of stroke.
  • Men had a higher incidence of 5-year and long-term AF; however, women trended toward a higher incidence of 5-year and long-term dementia and stroke compared to men.
  • Women have higher rates of dementia over time than men, driven by higher baseline stroke rates and nontraditional cardiovascular risk factors.
