Examining Genetic Risk Factors for Schizophrenia

Psychiatry Res; ePub 2017 Dec 21; Nimgaonkar, et al

There were no significant interactions between polygenic risk scores (PGRS) and serum C-reactive protein (CRP) for predicting schizophrenia vs control status, according to a recent study that examined how the genetic risk for schizophrenia can be estimated using PGRS. Patients with schizophrenia and individuals without psychosis were evaluated systematically using DSM IV criteria (n=794, n=446, respectively). To estimate risk for schizophrenia attributable to CRP and PGRS, serum from these participants was assayed for CRP levels using enzyme linked immunosorbent assays. PGRS was estimated from common DNA polymorphisms associated with schizophrenia from genome-wide association studies. Researchers found:

  • CRP is higher in persons with schizophrenia than controls.
  • CRP level and PGRS were not significantly correlated.
  • PGRS from the schizophrenia genome-wide associations predicted risk, too.
  • CRP and PGRS independently confer risk for schizophrenia.
