ECG Screening for CVD in Low-Risk Patients

JAMA; 2018 Jun 12; Curry, US Preventive Task Force

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) continues to recommend against electrocardiography (ECG) screening in asymptomatic adults at low-risk of cardiovascular events. In issuing the updated recommendation, the USPSTF reviewed evidence on whether screening with resting or exercise ECG improves health outcomes compared with the use of traditional cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment alone in asymptomatic adults. The group’s recommendation statement concluded:

  • The USPSTF recommends against screening with resting or exercise ECG to prevent CVD events in asymptomatic adults at low risk of CVD events.
  • The USPSTF concludes that the current evidence is insufficient to assess the balance of benefits and harms of screening with resting or exercise ECG to prevent CVD events in asymptomatic adults at intermediate or high risk of CVD events.
