Multiple sclerosis (MS) patients residing in a nursing home (NH) are less likely to report fatigue, pessimism, and tension when compared to those receiving home-based (HB) care, according to a recent study. Researchers conducted a cross-sectional analysis of the New York State Multiple Sclerosis Consortium to identify MS patients with a Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) ≥ 7.0. NH patients were compared to HB patients with respect to self-reported levels of loneliness, pessimism, tension, panic, irritation, morbid thoughts, feelings of guilt, and fatigue using independent-samples t tests and χ2 tests. They found:
- 94 of the 924 patients with EDSS ≥7.0 lived in a nursing home (10.2%).
- NH patients had higher mean EDSS compared to HB patients.
- However, NH patients were less likely than HB patients to report fatigue, feeling tense, and having feelings of pessimism.
