Weight Loss Interventions’ Impact on Migraines

Obesity; 2017 Nov 27; Bond, Thomas, Lipton, et al

Behavioral weight loss and migraine education control interventions resulted in comparable, sustained reductions in migraine headaches, according to a randomized, single-blind trial involving 110 women. Participants were aged between 18 and 50 years, experienced between 4 and 20 migraine days/month, and had a BMI between 25 and 49.9 kg/m2. They were randomized to 16 weeks of behavioral weight loss (n=54) or migraine education control (n=56). Patients recorded their headache history at baseline, as well as 16 to 20 weeks and 32 to 36 weeks after treatment. Investigators looked at change in migraine days/month. Among the results:

  • ~Three fourths of patients reported headache history at all 3 time points.
  • Patients in the behavioral intervention lost an average of 3.8 kg by the second time point, vs 0.9 kg in those who received migraine education control.
  • Weight loss at the third time point was 3.2 and 1.1 kg, respectively.
  • Migraine days/month were similar in both groups, ranging between 3 and 4.4 days during both follow-up time points.
