Evaluating Metabolic Syndrome in Obese Adolescents

It is appropriate to use conventional lipoproteins to evaluate the presence of systemic inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and risk of atherosclerosis in adolescents with obesity, according to a study involving 143 individuals. This runs counter to the approach with adults, where using apolipoprotein measures are advantageous. Investigators looked at body mass index z-score, body composition, fasting glucose (FG), insulin, lipids, high-sensitive c-reactive protein (hs-CRP), HbA1C, and insulin resistance (IR) in adolescents with obesity. Among the results:

  • 55% of patients met diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome (MS) and displayed higher systolic blood pressure (SBP), BMI, fat mass, IR, hs-CRP, TG, TC/HDL, TG/HDL, ApoB/ApoA-1 ratio, and HbA1C than those without MS.
  • They had lower HDL and ApoA-1.
  • Overall, TC/HDL and ApoB/ApoA-1 ratios were strongly correlated.
  • ApoB/ApoA-1 and TC/HDL-C ratios were positively correlated with SBP.
  • ApoB/ApoA-1 and TC/HDL-C ratios were correlated with hs-CRP.
