These Patients with T1D Less Apt to Experience CVD

Diabetes Care; ePub 2018, Jan 31; Gordin, et al

People with type 1 diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD) but not proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) are less apt to experience cardiovascular disease, according to a cross-sectional study involving 762 individuals. Participants had type 1 diabetes for ≥50 years. Investigators looked at the link between CVD status and CKD/PDR. Among the results:

  • 35% of patients with CKD and without PDR developed CVD.
  • 43% without CKD and with PDR developed such.
  • 68% of those with both CKD and PDR developed CVD.
  • PDR status was independently linked with CVD in patients with CKD.

The authors noted that their results suggest the existence of common protective factors for PDR and CVD.
