How Effective is NDDP in Low-Income Whites?

Diabetes Care; ePub 2018 Feb 21; Ritchie, et al

Low-income whites appear to experience wide ranging results when using the National Diabetes Prevention Program (NDDP) lifestyle intervention, researchers concluded after conducting a study involving nearly 1,000 individuals. Participants included Hispanics (59%), blacks (20%), and whites (20%) who used NDDP through a safety-net health care system in Colorado. Investigators looked at the program’s effectiveness, specifically percentage of sessions attended and weight loss. Among the results:

  • 6 in every 10 participants were low income.
  • Overall, patients attended an average of 35% of sessions.
  • The interaction of race/ethnicity by income was nonsignificant for attendance.
  • The effect of race/ethnicity on weight loss was significantly modified by income, with similar results for active and completing participants.
  • Among whites finishing the program, those with low income achieved only one-quarter of the weight loss obtained by their higher-income counterparts.
  • There were no weight-loss differences by income among Hispanics and blacks.
