Abdominal Obesity and Diabetes Link Evaluated

Diabetes Obes Metab; ePub 2017 Dec 1; Caspard, et al

Abdominal obesity—particularly in people aged ≥45 years—is a significant contributor to the prevalance of type 2 diabetes, researchers concluded after conducting a recent study. Participants were adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. Investigators estimated type 2 diabetes and abdominal obesity prevalence between 1999/2000 and 2013/2014. Among the results:

  • Abdominal obesity prevalence increased from 47% to 57%.
  • All age groups experienced significant increases.
  • Diabetes prevalence increased from 9% to 12%, with no substantial change in trend over the recent years.
  • Increased diabetes prevalence was limited to individuals with abdominal obesity, particularly in those aged ≥45 years.
  • There was no significant change in prevalence in non-obese individuals and in individuals aged <45 years.
