Key clinical point: Previously healthy people hospitalized for sepsis had a higher in-hospital mortality than did patients with a comorbidity, possibly because of later recognition.

Major finding: In-hospital mortality among previously healthy patients hospitalized for sepsis was double the rate of patients with a comorbidity.

Study details: Review of hospitalization records from about 6.7 million Americans including 337,983 with community-onset sepsis.

Disclosures: The study had no commercial funding. Dr. Rhee had no disclosures.
