Early palliative care consult decreases in-hospital mortality

Key clinical point: When initiated early, palliative care consults may increase the number of discharges to hospice for end-of-life patients.

Major finding: Hospital mortality occurred in none of the patients in the early palliative care group, versus six in the usual care group (P = .01).

Study details: A randomized, controlled clinical trial including 29 patients admitted to a medical ICU.
