Radiation Exposure Linked to Systemic Inflammation in COPD

Key clinical point: Short-term exposures to environmental particulate matter gamma radiation activities may trigger systemic inflammation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD).

Major finding: Increases in indoor PM gamma activity were linked to plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) increases ranging from 7.45% (95% Confidence interval , 2.77-12.4) to 13.4% (95% CI, 5.82-21.4.

Study details: Tracking of radiation exposure, CRP and other measurements in 85 patients with COPD over 2 years.

Disclosures: The National Institute of Health, the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funded the study. The study authors have no relevant disclosures.
