Fractional flow reserve (FFR) and angina severity predicted quality of life (QOL) improvement after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) among patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD), a recent study found. Researchers identified 706 stable patients with CAD from the FAME 1 and 2 trials who had at least 1 lesion with an FFR ≤0.80 which was treated with PCI and 185 patients with CAD who had no lesion with an FFR ≤0.80 and who were treated medically and served as a reference group. They found:
- QOL improved significantly after PCI in each abnormal FFR tertile; it did not change in the reference group.
- The lowest abnormal FFR subgroup had the greatest improvement in QOL at 1 month.
- Lower FFR, greater delta FFR, and higher angina class were associated with the greatest magnitude of QOL improvement both at 1 month and 1 year, on mixed-effects models for repeated measures.
