Early Postoperative VAs After CHD Surgery

Heart Rhythm; ePub 2018 Dec 4; Fuchs, et al

Early postoperative ventricular arrhythmias (VAs) following congenital heart disease (CHD) surgery are common, and postoperative VAs are associated with increased in-hospital mortality, a recent study found. Researchers sought to determine the incidence of in-hospital VAs following CHD surgery and assess the clinical relevance of this arrhythmia during the postoperative hospital course. Patients undergoing CHD surgery at a single center from September 2007 through December 2016 were prospectively enrolled. Among the findings:

  • 2,505 postoperative courses in 1,835 patients were included.
  • 464 (18.5%) patients had VAs, of which 135 (29.1%) received treatment.
  • Treated ventricular arrhythmias (TVAs) were associated with increased in-hospital mortality.
  • In multivariate analysis, TVA was an independent risk factor for in-hospital death.
