Prostate Ca Outcomes by Insurance Type Assessed

Cancer; ePub 2017 Oct 30; Mahal, Mahal, et al

Prostate cancer outcome differences by race were noted among patients with private insurance, but not in those covered by Medicaid, according to a study involving >155,000 individuals. Participants were aged <65 years and diagnosed with prostate cancer between 2007 and 2014. Investigators looked at the link between insurance and disease stage when patients were first seen. Among the results:

  • Patients covered by Medicaid were >4 times more likely to present with metastatic disease that those with private insurance.
  • They were 33% less likely to receive definitive treatment, and 83% more likely to have higher prostate cancer-specific mortality.
  • Racial disparities were seen in prostate cancer-specific mortality and presentation with metastatic disease in privately insured patients, but not in those covered by Medicaid.
