This Impacts CRC Screening Rates in Some Minorities

Cancer; ePub 2017 Oct 4; Hong, Tauscher, et al

Clinicians need to use interventions that are tailored to specific races and ethnicities to improve colorectal cancer (CRC) screening rates, researchers concluded after conducting a study involving more than 5,000 individuals. Participants included Hispanics (n=3,731) and Asian Americans (n=1,345) who were between 50 and 75 years of age who met criteria to be screened for CRC. Investigators looked at factors impacting screening uptake, including predisposing characteristics, health insurance, health needs, and health provider factors. Among the results:

  • Cultural factors and distrust in health care negatively impacted screening in Hispanics.
  • Cultural factors negatively impacted screening in Asian Americans.
  • Perceived quality of health services was positively linked with screening uptake; it mediated the negative link between cultural factors and screening.
  • Care access was not linked with screening.
