Women are more likely to receive cardiac resynchronization therapy though a pacemaker (CRT-P) than men; and women with CRT, particularly CRT-P, have a better overall survival than men. This according to a recent study that examined the practice of prescribing CRT-P or defibrillator (CRT-D) devices in older women and men with heart failure. 512 CRT recipients (aged ≥75 years, 26% women, 21% CRT-P) were included. Overall survival was compared by gender and type of CRT device implanted. Researchers found:
- Women were more likely to receive CRT-P vs men (26% vs 19%).
- Men with CRT-P were significantly older than women with CRT-P and both men and women with CRT-D.
- Women had lower all-cause mortality compared to men (HR, 0.75), mainly among CRT-P recipients (HR, 0.48); however, this association was diminished after adjusting for differences in patient characteristics (HR, 0.56).
