Approximately 4% of individuals with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations ≥190 mg/dL have plasma β-sitosterol concentrations above the 99th percentile and ~0.3% have concentrations consistent with sitosterolemia, a recent study found. The study included 207,926 participants and examined the relationship between hypercholesterolemia and sitosterolemia. Plasma concentrations were measured by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and LDL-C by direct assay. Researchers found:
- 4.3% of participants tested had LDL-C ≥190 mg/dL.
- Sitosterolemia occurs relatively commonly in patients with LDL-C ≥190 mg/dL.
- Sitosterolemia responds well to diet and statin therapy.
- The diagnosis of sitosterolemia should be considered in patients with ≥190 mg/dL.
