Does Bariatric Surgery Improve Lipoprotein Profile?

J Clin Lipidol; ePub 2017 Oct 25; Kjellmo, et al

In morbidly obese patients, bariatric surgery improves lipoprotein profile with favorable effects on triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and apoB, a recent study found. 34 morbidly obese patients were evaluated before and after lifestyle changes and then 1 year after bariatric surgery. They were compared to 17 lean individuals and several lipoprotein metrics, amyloid A (SAA), serum paraoxonase/arylesterase 1 (PON1), and macrophage cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC), were assessed. Researchers found:

  • Average weight loss after lifestyle intervention was 10.5% and 1 year after bariatric surgery was ~34.0%.
  • The lifestyle intervention significantly decreased triglycerides, LDL-C, and apoB.
  • Bariatric surgery further reduced triglycerides, increased HDL cholesterol, and reductions in LDL-C and apoB were sustained.
  • No changes in macrophage CEC were observed.

Kjellmo CA, Karlsson H, Nestvold TK, et al. Bariatric surgery improves lipoprotein profile in morbidly obese patients by reducing LDL-cholesterol, apoB and SAA/PON1 ratio, increasing HDL-cholesterol, but has no effect on cholesterol efflux capacity.
